Over fifty years in the making, Innisfree Garden it is the work of landscape architect Lester Collins, FASLA (1914–1993), with important contributions by his clients, artist and teacher Walter Beck and gardener and heiress Marion Burt Beck. At its core, Innisfree is about the individual’s experience in nature. Inviting exploration and even contemplation, Collins’ sweeping landscape merges the essence of Modernist and Romantic ideas with traditional Chinese and Japanese garden design principles in a form that evolved through subtle handling of the site and slow manipulation of its ecology. The result is a distinctly American stroll garden—a sublime composition of rock, water, wood, and sky achieved with remarkable economy and grace.

Innisfree has organized docent tours for the weekend of the horse trials! Thursday July 24th, Friday July 25th and Saturday July 26th, each day at 11:00am.  Please allow around 45 minutes to 1 hour for the tour.  When you check in at the gate, please let them know you heard about them via the Millbrook Horse Trials!

Upstate New York’s Hudson River Valley has a rich sporting tradition that has only gotten more vibrant with passing generations. Orvis Sandanona, located in the village of Millbrook, is iconic in the region as the oldest permitted shooting preserve in the United States. The main clubhouse was built during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson, and the four-hundred-acre property has been host to a parade of discerning wingshooters ever since. While celebrating the heritage and tradition upon which it was built, Orvis Sandanona has matured into a thriving, modern shooting facility that is internationally regarded as among the very best.

Visitors can enjoy two unique sporting clays courses, a Five Stand, Wobble Trap, a thriving retail space, and any number of monthly shooting events to engage in. A regular schedule of Orvis Wingshooting Schools is available by reservation, as are private lessons with Sandanona’s faculty of recognized instructors. Non-shooters, or those taking a break from the day afield, can unwind on the wrap-around porch, or enjoy a meal in the clubhouse dining room.

TREVOR ZOO

Located just minutes from the Horse Trials, Millbrook School’s Trevor Zoo inspires all to live responsibly by educating its students and visitors about conservation, wildlife, and the natural world. Accredited by the AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums), the zoo is open to the public every day of the year from 9 am till 5 pm, including all Holidays. Founded in 1936 by Millbrook’s first biology teacher, Frank Trevor, more than 180 animals, including 11 endangered species, reside at the zoo. A unique aspect of the zoo is that some 75 high school students work at the zoo every day and help care for the animals. The zoo includes wolves, lemurs, otters, red pandas, wallabies and much more.
