LOOKING FOR A QUICK HORSEY BREAK?

Here are four places to visit within 10 miles of the event

If you have a bit of down time, your husband and family in tow, or just want to explore the beautiful Hudson Valley while attending MHT, these are noteworthy places to explore. The best part: all are within a 10 mile radius, so you’re never too far away to nip back just in case!

Wethersfield: On 1000 acres of rolling hills, Wethersfield is a beautiful country estate only a few minutes down the road from the show. The estate is open to the public, which includes various art collections, a 3-acre formal garden, and a 7-acre Wilderness Garden. With walking trails and renowned gardens to explore, it is one of the oldest estates in the area, with breathtaking views of the Millbrook countryside.

Trevor Zoo: Located at the Millbrook School, (which borders the Millbrook Horse Trials cross country course) the zoo was founded by Millbrook’s first biology teacher, Frank Trevor. With more than 180 exotic animals, the Zoo strives to educate visitors and students about wildlife and the care of endangered species. It’s the perfect place to take kids and give them a break from the show, or the non-horsey husband! It is open from 9 am to 5 pm every day. You can meet the animals that you often hear while out on course! Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for kids under 13. Children 3 and under are free.

Innisfree Gardens: Over fifty years in the making, Landscape Architect Lestor Collins created a unique garden that combines mid-twentieth century design with elements of Chinese and Japanese traditional garden design. He invites visitors to experience nature and the essence of modernist and romantic ideas within the garden. The gardens he created still use environmentally sensitive garden techniques that he used when he created Innisfree. If you love landscape design, this is a particularly cool garden to visit. Pre-registration is required for garden visiting.

Harlem Valley Rail Trail: Running from the hamlet of Wassaic to Copake Falls, the Harlem Valley Rail Trail is a beautiful walking, running & cycling trail for people to enjoy the old railroad bed which highlights the beautiful & unique Harlem Valley. If you are a morning jogger, or want to take your kids out for a bit of fresh air (sans horses), there is access just down the road from the trials in the town of Amenia.

Our top foodie picks from some of our favorite Millbrook Horse Trials riders
Picture
Whether competing, grooming, volunteering or just spectating, Millbrook and the surrounding Hudson Valley areas are not only notorious for its beautiful equestrian landscapes, but also its food scene and local shops. We chatted with some local riders as well as a few notable equestrians who have competed at Millbrook consistently over the years to find out the best spots to dine after a long day. Get the inside scoop on what places are on the top of their lists:

5* Event riders Ariel Grald & Sara Murphy: Getting nods from both Ariel & Sara, the delicious & cozy French restaurant Cafe Les Baux in the Village of Millbrook is their favorite place for dinner. Known for its authentic and delicious French dishes, and wonderful wine list, make sure you get a reservation for one evening. Neither Ariel or Sara could single out a favorite meal as everything is scrummy, although if you like escargot, they have some of the most delicious in the area!

4* local rider Booli Selmayr: While it might seem odd that a restaurant is famous for its thin crust pizza & creative sushi, Julien’s delivers on both fronts. The couple relocated to Millbrook from Brooklyn, and merged their culinary skills into one place right in the village of Millbrook. Booli’s favorites include their Kale Salad and Fried Artichokes. The locals also rave about the delicious sushi, and Booli can attest that it's also some of the best in the area!

MHT Board Member Mimi Babcock: If you want to splurge and treat yourself, Serevan is the place to go! This Mediterranean inspired restaurant is just a short drive down the hill from the Horse Trials before the quaint town of Amenia. Amernian chef, Serge, always has fresh specials that are sure to delight. Not being able to pick just one, Mimi suggests the fresh oysters or falafel plate to start, the diver scallops as a main, and the rose water & vanilla creme brulee or Armenian Nazouk with macerated fruits for dessert. Yum!

Fitchs Corner’s own Nick Meyers: If you’re dying for a good cup of coffee & breakfast to start your day, Babette’s Kitchen in Millbrook is Nick’s go to cafe. Serving up strong coffee, breakfast sandwiches & pastries, as well as to go sandwiches and salads for lunch. A regular at this popular breakfast & lunch spot right on the main drag in Millbrook, Nick recommends fueling up on their coffee and loves the cinnamon buns and cupcakes as a delectable treat. For lunch, it's the salmon BLT & Soba Noodles for the win. They also stock local artisanal foods, cheeses and vegetables which Nick also recommends trying. You won’t be disappointed!
